What you'll need to get started

ABN (Australian Business Number)

An independent contractor is a person who has an ABN and is generally responsible for managing their own insurance, tax and superannuation.

The ATO website has a quick and easy application process.

National Police Check

Cost: From $41.

Where to start:

Apply online with CITED and receive your Police Check via email.

Working with Children Check

Details: Only required if you wish to provide support to children and/or teenagers.

Be sure to apply for an Employee/Paid check, or upgrade your existing card from Volunteer to Paid.

Cost: from $80 to $145 (dependent on state of residence).

For TAS & ACT - A Valid Working with Vulnerable People card

Details: Required to work with any age in either TAS or ACT.

Both checks double as a Working with Children Check.

Turnaround Time: allow 3-4 weeks.

Provide two professional references relating to your industry experience.

Qualifications required to provide the following support:

Personal Care

A Certificate III in Aged Care or Disability or two years of professional Personal Care experience from the last five years, confirmed by two professional referees.

Nursing

Current nursing registration with AHPRA that has been active for at least 12 months prior as a Registered Nurse or Enrolled Nurse only and at least one professional or character reference.

Allied Health

For most therapy/allied health professions, registration with AHPRA is required for a minimum of 12 months and must provide one professional or character reference.

Speech pathology: must be registered with Speech Pathology Australia and provide at least one professional or character reference.

Other

All qualifications will be assessed based on the service to be provided. Please provide all relevant qualifications in your application and we will contact you should we require any further information.

You have the freedom to set your rates, subject to the Common Care minimum rate. Rates can be set for service types, session lengths, days and times of the week and public holidays. All pricing is agreed with clients before support is delivered.

Payment FAQs

How long does it take to get paid?

Your payment will be sent to you within two business days from when we collect the payment from your client. Payment collection times depend on the client’s funding source and payment method and can vary. We follow up on any overdue or unpaid payments as per our terms of use.

Do I get paid superannuation?

As an independent contractor, you are responsible for paying your own tax and super as part of income you obtain from working us.

How does invoicing work?

Our team is responsible for invoicing clients correctly and ensuring that invoices are followed up. We then process payment directly to your selected bank account.

As an independent contractor, you are required to provide your own insurance. We assist you with getting a policy easily with one of our insurance brokers, and we even provide credit towards payment of your chosen policy.
